About

A Lister CS (Cold Start) engine with radiator cooling and Hamworthy crankshaft mounted compressor.
This engine/compressor combination was designed for building up a reservoir of high pressure air to start larger “air start” engines.
Hamworthy supplied these units, painted blue/grey into ship’s engine rooms.
Engine :- Serial No CS65000, Year circa 1949, 3.5 HP
Compressor:- Serial No 79544 , Pressure 350lbs/in2
Received in an unrestored condition, although everything appeared to work correctly.
The original paintwork looked a torquise / grey colour.
For starting, the CS engine has the screw in/out compression ratio change device, screwed in to provide high compression ratio for starting and out for running.
This valve must be either completely closed or completely open.
There is the usual valve lifter to enable cranking up to speed and the compressor has it’s own unloading screw, again to enable starting.

Provided by Martin Adams, who had the engine in store at Milnsbridge, Huddersfield
